| Back pain and neck pain
are common ailments that mankind faces. About 80-90% of us
get it at some time or another. Although most problems are
best treated without surgery, many complex disorders do require
surgical treatment.
The Division of spinal surgery offers a co-ordinated approach
to the management of complex problems like back pain and neck
pain. The aim of treatment is to return the patient to productive
lives as quickly as possible.
The wide range of neck and back problems that are managed
at the Division of Spinal Surgery include:Disc problems, spinal
stenosis, Sciatica fractures and dislocations, Spinal tumors,
Osteoporosis, and Spine infection includes tuberculosis
The features of Division of Spinal Surgery include: A non-operative
approach focusing on medical and physical therapy, prompt
initiation of therapy, an emphasis on patient education and
involvement in the treatment plan, services of psychotherapist
and physiotherapist available at the same center and assessment
of Bone mineral Density in Osteoporosis and its management.
Each patient is carefully evaluated to determine the cause
of his pain along with the disability and psychological assessment.
The range of surgical procedures performed includes Microdiscectomy
for prolapsed intervertebal disc, decompression surgeries
in cases if degenerative spinal stenosis and tuberculosis
and spinal stabilization procedures in patients with spinal
trauma, tumors and infections.
The Division is also active in research and has to its credit
collection of data about disability, psychological parameters
and MRI findings in Indian population. The first normative
reference database for Bone Mineral Density in Indian men
and women was established by the unit and ongoing studies
include data on patients with fractures and in women in relation
to menopause.
In the field of patient education, the division has conducted
various camps and public lectures in association with various
NGOs and industries. Significant contribution has also been
made through articles in the newspapers and interviews on
Doordarshan and All India Radio.

The Division of Spinal Surgery
is headed by Dr Ketan Pande who has completed MS and DNB (Orthopaedics)
in 1991 and 1992 respectively. He was also awarded MCh(Orthopaedics)at
the University of Liverpool with two distinctions namely Examiners
Prize for Best Overall Performance and the Norah Walker Prize
in radiology.
In addition to work in various subspecialities in Orthpaedics,
Dr Pande has had specialist Fellowship training in Spinal Surgery
at internationally reputed Centre for Spinal Studies and Surgery,
Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham and The Walton Centre for
Neurology and Neurosurgery, Liverpool.
As a Clinical fellow at the WHO Collaborating Centre for Metabolic
Bone Diseases, Sheffield, Dr Pande has gained extensive experience
of managing various metabolic bone diseases particularly osteoporosis.
Dr Pandes work in the field of Spinal Surgery and Osteoporosis
has been recognized both at national and international level
in the form of various fellowship and awards. His project on
study of Bone Mineral Density in Indian patient with Hip fracture
has received Research Grant from the Bone and Joint Decade,
National Action Network, India. Recently he was invited to attend
the AO User Group Meeting and AO Masterclass for Spinal surgeons
at Nottingham, UK. He is also a member of the expert group of
the Osteoporosis Society of India and has contributed to the
Action Plan Osteoporosis published by the Osteoporosis Society
of India. |
